Top 5 tips to reverse inflammation

Migraines, swelling, muscle pains, itching, or even infertility? You wouldn't think these symptoms might all be linked to constant, chronic and low level inflammation in your body, due to your lifestyle or diet, would you? It is a silent process, sometimes without any symptoms. This is something you should investigate. Inflammation in our bodies is a completely normal and healthy response to an "attack" on our immune system or an injury. However, our immune system can be compromised and switched on constantly when it tries to fight something it considers alien. So if you feel something is off, it probably is. This is a very complex topic and there are so many layers to it, but here are my top 5 tips to reverse inflammation :

1. Heal your gut

Your gut is the first line of your immune system. When it gets compromised, it won't just have an impact on your digestion, but on your whole body. So bring on the good guys: add pre-biotics (non-digestible carbohydrates- mainly fibre) an probiotics (good bacteria) to your supplement routine. They can make a real difference within weeks.

2. Clean up your diet

We all have unique genetics, bodies and immune systems, but due to changes in how we process and treat our food, many of us develop reactions to gluten, red meat, dairy, corn, soy and nightshades. Try to work out what triggers your body. I am teaching my clients to do an elimination diet, which is a very effective method to use. Try to avoid processed food overall and prepare your fresh meals at home. Eliminating or cutting back on sugar and alcohol could make a big difference and alleviate your symptoms.

3. Look at your lifestyle and environment

Do you have a stressful lifestyle or work environment? Are you living in a very polluted area? Smoke, airborne irritants, chemicals, pesticides can have a huge impact on your health and cause inflammation in your body. Just as much as a stressful job or relationship. Eliminate toxins as well as toxic situations and people from your life. Your health will thank you for it!

4. Move your body

No news here - at least 30 mins of exercise 3-5 times a week can change your life for the better. Exercise boosts blood circulation and sweating helps eliminating toxins. Not even talking about how relaxed you will feel after a good run or a yoga class. So get moving and not just for weight loss.

5. Add the good guys to your diet

You can do little changes to your diet by adding anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric (best with black pepper for bio-availability), dark chocolate, green tea, wild-caught salmon, blueberries, kelp, ginger, coconut oil or garlic - just to name a couple. I love a good turmeric tea with coconut oil (golden milk) and I add a lot of garlic and ginger to my meals when cooking. Start to experiment, it will be fun!
